Milk Snake
Ease of care: Beginner
The Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum) has a colourful pattern of black, yellow and red stripes. Their natural environment covers grasslands, forests and rocky hillsides, they also thrive in farmland areas. The species is more active during the early morning, late afternoon and evening, often referred to as crepuscular. Contrary to popular preconceptions, the ‘milk’ part of their name does not originate from the snakes entering cow barns at night to drink the milk from the udders of the cows. The barns with their hay and cattle feed attract many rodents, which is what appeals to these snakes.
